The Front Leg Splint for Dogs provides rigid support for the lower portion of a dog’s front limb, including the carpal joint, paw and toes. Designed by Ortocanis, the splint extends from the mid-forearm to underneath the paw to help maintain the entire distal limb in a supported position.
This orthopedic splint is manufactured from thermodeformable polypropylene and lined with closed-cell foam. Its rigid outer structure provides stability, while the padded interior helps create a more comfortable contact surface against the dog’s leg.
The splint can be used on the right or left front leg. It is sold individually and is available in six sizes, including an XXS size suitable for cats and certain very small dogs.
Complete Support for the Lower Front Limb
Unlike the shorter Ortocanis bootie splint, the Front Leg Splint for Dogs extends higher along the leg. It supports the carpus, continues beneath the paw and helps stabilize the toes.
The longer design may be appropriate when support is required throughout the lower front limb rather than only around the carpus or paw.
The splint’s shape helps position the leg while limiting movement through the supported area. Adjustable hook-and-loop straps allow it to be fitted and removed for regular inspection.
Possible Applications
A veterinarian or qualified canine rehabilitation professional may recommend a rigid front-leg splint in situations involving:
- Certain injuries affecting the lower front limb
- Carpal or paw instability
- Injuries involving the toes
- Neurological deficits affecting limb positioning
- Neuropraxia
- Certain brachial plexus conditions
- Radial nerve difficulties
- Knuckling or abnormal paw placement
- Temporary postoperative protection
- Veterinarian-supervised rehabilitation
The appropriate product will depend on the location and nature of the dog’s condition. This splint should not be selected solely from a list of symptoms without professional guidance.
Thermodeformable Polypropylene Construction
The rigid shell is made from thermodeformable polypropylene. This material provides structured support and may allow a veterinary professional to make certain fitting adjustments when appropriate.
The inside is covered with closed-cell foam to create a padded surface between the rigid shell and the dog’s limb. The foam does not eliminate the need for careful fitting and regular skin inspection.
Do not heat, reshape, cut or otherwise modify the splint unless directed by a veterinarian or professional experienced with orthopedic products.
Six Available Sizes
Select the size according to measurement A. This measurement is taken while the dog is standing.
Begin at the carpal pad near the wrist. Continue down the back of the limb, underneath the paw and forward to the tip of the longest toe.
Available sizes:
- XXS / Cat: measurement A of 7.6 cm — for cats or dogs under approximately 4.5 kg
- XS: measurement A of 10.8 cm — approximately 4.5 to 11 kg
- Small: measurement A of 13.3 cm — approximately 11 to 18 kg
- Medium: measurement A of 15.2 cm — approximately 18 to 30 kg
- Large: measurement A of 17.8 cm — approximately 30 to 38 kg
- Extra Large: measurement A of 18.4 cm — approximately 38 to 55 kg
The weight ranges are approximate. Always prioritize the dog’s actual measurements over its breed or weight alone.
If your dog falls between two sizes, Ortocanis recommends selecting the larger size.
Total Splint Length
Measurement B corresponds to the total length of the splint. It is measured from the tip of the longest toe, underneath the paw and up the back of the front limb to approximately the middle of the forearm.
Approximate total splint lengths are:
- XXS / Cat: 14 cm
- XS: 19.7 cm
- Small: 22.9 cm
- Medium: 26 cm
- Large: 28 cm
- Extra Large: 30.5 cm
Measurement A should be used for the size selection. Measurement B helps confirm the overall height of the product on the dog’s leg.
Right or Left Front Leg
The same model can be used on either the right or left front leg. The splint is sold individually.
If your dog requires bilateral support, consult a veterinarian before fitting splints on both front legs. Supporting two limbs simultaneously may significantly change balance, gait and weight distribution.
Gradual Introduction
Introduce the Front Leg Splint for Dogs gradually unless the treating professional provides different instructions.
Begin with short supervised sessions. Observe how the dog stands and walks, and check whether the splint remains properly aligned.
Remove the product after each initial session and inspect the skin, paw, toes and carpal area. Watch for:
- Redness
- Rubbing or chafing
- Pressure marks
- Swelling
- Moisture accumulation
- Skin irritation
- Unusual discomfort
Discontinue use and consult a veterinary professional if any persistent irritation or discomfort occurs.
Improving the Fit
In some cases, the dog’s limb may be slightly narrow inside the selected splint. A veterinarian may recommend applying a cohesive bandage to increase the limb’s thickness and improve the fit.
Do not apply excessive padding or tighten the straps to compensate for an incorrect size. Excessive pressure could interfere with circulation or create uncomfortable contact points.
The splint should remain securely positioned without rotating, sliding or pinching the skin.
Care and Supervision
Keep the splint and its interior lining clean and dry. Remove dirt, hair and moisture regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
The dog should be supervised while wearing the splint, particularly during the adaptation period. Activity level, wearing schedule and removal periods should follow the veterinarian’s recommendations.
Veterinary Guidance Recommended
The Front Leg Splint for Dogs is an orthopedic support product. It does not replace veterinary diagnosis, treatment, surgery or professional rehabilitation.
Consult a veterinarian if your dog has sustained an injury, cannot bear weight on a front leg, drags a paw, walks on the top of its toes or displays pain, swelling or reduced mobility.
A veterinary professional can determine whether the front-leg splint is appropriate and provide guidance concerning sizing, fitting, wearing time and permitted activity.
