Seven-day dog wheelchair rental in Canada
The Dog Wheelchair Rental by Ortocanis allows Canadian dog owners to use an adjustable rear-support wheelchair for a seven-day period. This service may be considered for a dog with reduced hind-leg mobility, during a short rehabilitation period or when evaluating whether the animal can adapt to a wheelchair before purchasing one.
The wheelchair model is selected according to the dog’s approximate weight, floor-to-groin measurement and overall mobility requirements.
Availability of the appropriate size must be confirmed by ConceptASR before the rental. A signed rental agreement and a refundable security deposit are mandatory.
This is a rental service and not a wheelchair purchase. Rental service is available in Canada only and is not offered for shipment to the United States.
Rental fee and security deposit
The standard rental conditions are:
- Rental period: 7 days
- Rental fee: $150.00 CAD
- Refundable security deposit: $350.00 CAD
- Total collected before the rental: $500.00 CAD
- The deposit is not included in the rental fee
- The security deposit is refunded following the return and inspection of the wheelchair, subject to the rental agreement
- Any extension must receive prior authorization from ConceptASR
- The appropriate wheelchair size remains subject to availability
The wheelchair must be returned clean, complete and in the condition specified in the signed rental agreement.
Additional charges or deductions from the security deposit may apply according to the terms of the agreement if equipment is missing, damaged, excessively soiled or returned late.
Adjustable rear-support wheelchair
The Ortocanis wheelchair features a lightweight aluminium frame designed to support the dog’s hindquarters while allowing the front legs to remain active.
The width, length and height of the frame can be adjusted according to the dog’s measurements. The wheelchair includes front and rear support harnesses that must be correctly positioned before use.
Standard rental equipment includes:
- Lightweight aluminium frame
- Two rear wheels
- Adjustable width
- Adjustable frame length
- Adjustable height
- Front support harness
- Rear support harness
- Rear-limb mobility assistance
- Indoor and outdoor use
- Equipment cleaned and inspected before rental
The standard rental does not include the optional front-wheel attachment.
Situations in which rental may be considered
With veterinary guidance, temporary wheelchair rental may be considered for dogs experiencing:
- Reduced mobility in the hind legs
- Hindquarter weakness
- Partial or complete paralysis of the rear legs
- Certain intervertebral disc conditions
- Hip dysplasia
- Osteoarthritis
- Proprioceptive deficits
- Post-operative recovery
- A temporary mobility limitation
- A rehabilitation period
- A need to trial a wheelchair before purchasing one
The wheelchair does not diagnose or treat the cause of reduced mobility. The dog should be evaluated by a veterinarian, particularly when weakness or paralysis appears suddenly.
The suitability of a rear-support wheelchair depends partly on the condition and strength of the dog’s front legs. The animal must generally have sufficient front-limb function to propel and steer the wheelchair.
Required measurements
Before the rental can be confirmed, ConceptASR requires:
- The dog’s approximate weight
- The vertical distance from the floor to the groin
- Information about the condition of the front legs
- Details concerning the dog’s mobility limitations
- Any special positioning or support requirements
A photograph of the dog standing naturally may also be requested to help select and adjust the appropriate wheelchair.
Take the floor-to-groin measurement while the dog is standing in a natural position whenever possible. If the dog cannot stand safely without assistance, have another person support it gently while the measurement is taken.
Accurate measurements are essential. An incorrectly sized wheelchair may be uncomfortable, unstable or difficult for the dog to use.
How the rental process works
- Contact ConceptASR to verify availability.
- Provide the dog’s weight and floor-to-groin measurement.
- Share relevant information about the dog’s mobility and front-leg function.
- Allow ConceptASR to identify the appropriate available model.
- Review and sign the rental agreement.
- Pay the $150.00 rental fee and the $350.00 security deposit.
- Take possession of the wheelchair and complete the required adjustments.
- Introduce the dog to the wheelchair gradually.
- Return the complete equipment according to the agreement.
- The security deposit is refunded after return and inspection, subject to the contract conditions.
Placing an online order does not guarantee immediate availability of the correct wheelchair size. Confirmation from ConceptASR remains required.
Introducing the dog to the wheelchair
The initial adjustment and adaptation should take place gradually on a level, non-slip surface. Make sure every strap is correctly positioned and that the frame remains centred around the dog’s body.
The wheelchair should support the hindquarters without lifting the dog excessively or placing uncomfortable pressure on the chest, abdomen or groin.
Begin with a short supervised session. Some dogs may adapt quickly, while others require several brief sessions to become comfortable with the frame and wheels.
Never leave the dog unattended in the wheelchair. Avoid stairs, steep inclines, unstable surfaces and areas where the wheels could become trapped.
Bathroom use
When correctly selected and adjusted, the wheelchair and rear harness are designed to allow many dogs to urinate or defecate without being removed from the equipment.
Verify the position of the rear harness before every session. The openings must remain unobstructed and the straps must not press against the genital or abdominal area.
Equipment inspection and return
The wheelchair is provided clean and inspected. Before every use, verify:
- Frame connections
- Width, length and height adjustments
- Wheel attachment
- Wheel movement
- Harnesses and straps
- Buckles and fasteners
- Overall alignment
Stop using the wheelchair and contact ConceptASR if a component becomes loose, damaged or difficult to adjust.
The wheelchair must be returned with all supplied components and according to the deadline and conditions established in the rental agreement.
