Padded protection for one canine elbow

The Elbow Protector for Dogs by Ortocanis is a unilateral orthopedic support designed to protect and stabilize one front elbow. Its adjustable neoprene construction features reinforced internal padding positioned over the joint to help protect sensitive areas from contact with hard surfaces.

This product differs from the Ortocanis Bilateral Elbow Pads, which support both elbows simultaneously. The Elbow Protector is sold individually and must be ordered for either the dog’s left or right front leg.

The correct size is selected according to the complete circumference of the affected elbow.

Reinforced elbow padding

The protector incorporates a reinforced padded section over the elbow. This padding creates a protective barrier between the joint and hard surfaces when the dog lies down or changes position.

Repeated contact with floors and other firm surfaces may create pressure around the elbow, especially in large dogs, senior animals or dogs that spend extended periods lying down.

The reinforced patch is designed to protect the joint area while allowing the dog to retain movement in the front leg. The protector should remain centred over the elbow during use.

Adjustable neoprene construction

The soft neoprene construction adapts around the leg and provides gentle external support. Neoprene also helps retain warmth around the protected area.

Two adjustable hook-and-loop straps pass through buckles above and below the joint. This fastening system helps keep the protector positioned without requiring excessive compression.

The upper strap is intended for the initial fitting. Once the correct adjustment has been achieved, it generally does not need to be completely reopened each time.

The fastening located closer to the elbow can then be used to put the protector on and remove it more easily.

When may an elbow protector be considered?

With veterinary guidance, the Ortocanis Elbow Protector may be considered in situations involving:

  • Elbow osteoarthritis
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Joint instability
  • Ligament injuries
  • Certain pre-operative support requirements
  • Certain post-operative recovery protocols
  • Elbow hygromas
  • Bursitis
  • Persistent pressure calluses
  • Sensitive or irritated skin around the elbow
  • A need for protection against hard surfaces
  • Reduced proprioception affecting a front leg

The product does not diagnose or treat the underlying cause of elbow pain, swelling or lameness. A veterinarian should evaluate persistent symptoms or any sudden change in the dog’s gait.

Left or right elbow

Select the side while standing behind the dog and looking in the same direction as the animal.

  • Choose the left model for the dog’s left front elbow.
  • Choose the right model for the dog’s right front elbow.

Do not determine the side while facing the dog, as the orientation will appear reversed.

If both elbows require protection, the Ortocanis Bilateral Elbow Pads may be more appropriate. Seek professional advice when choosing between unilateral and bilateral support.

How to measure the elbow

Use a flexible sewing tape to measure the complete circumference of the affected elbow. Take the measurement around the joint at the location indicated in the product’s measuring guide.

The dog should be standing naturally, with the front leg in a comfortable position. Do not compress the skin or fur with the measuring tape.

Available sizes:

  • XS: elbow circumference from 7.5 to 11.5 cm
  • S: elbow circumference from 11.6 to 16 cm
  • M: elbow circumference from 16.1 to 20.5 cm
  • L: elbow circumference from 20.6 to 25 cm
  • XL: elbow circumference from 25.1 to 32 cm

If the measurement falls between two sizes, Ortocanis recommends selecting the smaller size.

Breed examples are only approximate. Dogs of the same breed can have different proportions, so elbow circumference must remain the principal sizing criterion.

How to put on the elbow protector

Open the lower fastening and loosen the straps before positioning the product. Carefully slide or place the protector around the affected front leg.

Centre the reinforced padded section directly over the elbow. Make sure the material lies flat and does not fold against the skin.

Pass the upper and lower straps through their buckles and fasten them gradually. The protector should remain stable without restricting circulation or the dog’s natural front-leg movement.

Allow the dog to take several supervised steps. Confirm that the protector does not rotate, slide or pull tightly against the armpit.

After the initial fitting, use the elbow-level fastening to remove and reinstall the product while preserving the adjustment of the upper strap whenever possible.

Gradual adaptation

Begin with short supervised sessions to allow the dog to become accustomed to the protector.

Check the skin frequently during the first few days, paying particular attention to:

  • The elbow
  • The upper and lower edges of the protector
  • Areas beneath the straps
  • The inside of the front leg
  • The armpit area

Remove the product immediately if the dog displays significant discomfort or if the protector changes its gait.

The duration and frequency of use should follow the recommendations of the veterinarian or rehabilitation professional responsible for the dog.

Signs requiring adjustment or professional advice

Stop using the protector and review the fit if you observe:

  • Persistent redness
  • Skin rubbing
  • Swelling above or below the protector
  • Increased lameness
  • Increased pain
  • Hair loss under a strap
  • A cold or unusually warm paw
  • Rotation or repeated slipping
  • Difficulty bending the front leg

The protector must never be tightened excessively in an attempt to prevent movement. Correct sizing and positioning are more important than strong strap tension.

Inspection and care

Before every use, inspect the neoprene, reinforced padding, seams, hook-and-loop fasteners, straps and buckles.

Clean the protector according to the supplied care instructions. Close the hook-and-loop fasteners before washing to help protect the material.

Allow the product to dry completely before placing it back on the dog.
