The Hock Wrap for Dogs by Ortocanis is a soft and flexible orthopedic support designed for the hock joint, also known as the tarsal joint, on a dog’s rear leg. Its neoprene construction provides gentle compression and helps retain body heat around the joint while allowing the dog to continue moving naturally.

Unlike a rigid hock splint, this wrap does not contain hard bars or immobilizing elements. It is intended for dogs that require moderate joint support without completely restricting movement. The wrap can be worn on either the right or left rear leg and is sold individually.

Flexible Support for the Hock Joint

The canine hock plays an essential role in propulsion, balance and weight distribution. When this joint becomes painful, unstable or weakened, a dog may hesitate to place weight on the affected leg, walk with an altered gait or become less willing to participate in normal activities.

The Ortocanis hock wrap surrounds the joint with flexible neoprene, helping provide a greater sense of stability during everyday movement. Its adjustable straps allow the level of compression to be adapted to the dog while helping keep the wrap securely positioned.

Because it remains flexible, the support can be useful for dogs that still need controlled mobility during rehabilitation or daily activities.

When Can a Hock Wrap Be Helpful?

The Hock Wrap for Dogs may be considered for dogs experiencing:

  • Mild weakness or instability of the hock joint
  • Osteoarthritis or age-related joint discomfort
  • Ligament or tendon injuries
  • Joint inflammation
  • Postoperative recovery
  • Reduced confidence when bearing weight
  • Recurring discomfort during physical activity

The warmth retained by the neoprene may help keep the tissues around the joint comfortable. Gentle compression can also provide proprioceptive feedback, helping some dogs become more aware of the position of the affected limb.

This product does not replace veterinary treatment. A veterinarian or canine rehabilitation professional should evaluate persistent limping, swelling, pain or instability before an orthopedic support is introduced.

Soft Neoprene Construction

Neoprene is flexible, comfortable and capable of adapting to the shape of the dog’s leg. It provides support while allowing the hock to bend during walking.

The adjustable closures make it easier to achieve a secure fit without applying excessive pressure. The wrap should sit firmly around the hock but should never interfere with circulation or cause swelling below the support.

Depending on availability, the product may be supplied in black or grey.

Right or Left Rear Leg

The same hock wrap can be used on either rear leg. This makes it suitable for dogs with an injury or weakness affecting the right or left hock.

The product is sold individually. If support is required on both rear legs, two wraps must be ordered.

Choosing the Correct Size

Measure the circumference of the leg above and below the hock joint. Take the measurements while the dog is standing naturally and avoid pulling the measuring tape too tightly.

SizeUpper circumferenceLower circumference
XXS7–9 cm5.5–7.5 cm
XS9–12.5 cm7.5–10.5 cm
S12.5–14 cm10.5–12 cm
M14–16.5 cm12–13.5 cm
L16.5–17.5 cm13.5–15.5 cm
XL17.5–19 cm15.5–16.5 cm

If the dog’s measurements fall between two sizes, Ortocanis recommends selecting the smaller size.

Correct sizing is essential. A wrap that is too loose may move out of position, while one that is too tight could create pressure or affect circulation.

How to Introduce the Hock Wrap

Introduce the support gradually so the dog has time to become comfortable with the sensation of wearing it.

During the first two or three days, use the wrap for no more than approximately three to four hours per day. Once the dog is accustomed to it, wearing time may be increased according to the dog’s needs and the recommendations of a veterinary professional.

Check the leg regularly, especially during the initial uses. Remove the wrap immediately if you notice:

  • Skin irritation or rubbing
  • Swelling above or below the wrap
  • Cold toes or changes in skin colour
  • Increased limping or discomfort
  • Persistent attempts to remove the support

The dog should not be left unsupervised during the first fitting sessions.

Applying the Wrap

Position the wrap around the hock joint and close the adjustable straps so the support remains stable. The material should make even contact with the leg without pinching the skin or restricting normal movement.

After a few minutes of walking, verify that the wrap has remained in place. Readjust it if it slides, rotates or creates pressure around the paw.

For postoperative use or significant injuries, follow the fitting and wearing schedule recommended by the veterinarian or rehabilitation professional.

Cleaning Instructions

To maintain the wrap:

  • Machine wash in cold water
  • Use a mild detergent
  • Do not use bleach
  • Do not use fabric softener
  • Allow the wrap to air dry completely

Close the fastening straps before washing to help protect the material. Do not place the product in a dryer or expose it to direct heat.
