The Life Vest for Dogs from Ortocanis provides additional flotation and visibility during supervised water activities. Its anatomical shape, adjustable closures, reflective strips and dorsal rescue handle make it suitable for recreational swimming, boat trips and veterinarian-supervised hydrotherapy.

Available in five sizes, the vest combines hook-and-loop fasteners with adjustable nylon straps and snap buckles. This dual fastening system helps create a secure and comfortable fit around the dog’s body.

The brightly coloured exterior and reflective details help make the dog easier to locate near or in the water.

Additional Flotation for Water Activities

Not every dog is a confident or efficient swimmer. Age, body shape, fatigue, health conditions and water movement can all affect a dog’s swimming ability.

The Life Vest for Dogs adds buoyancy around the torso and can help the animal maintain a more stable position in the water.

It may be used for:

  • Supervised recreational swimming
  • Boat trips
  • Water games
  • Dockside activities
  • Veterinarian-supervised hydrotherapy
  • Rehabilitation exercises in water
  • Dogs learning to swim
  • Senior dogs requiring additional assistance

The vest does not make water activities risk-free. Dogs must always remain under direct adult supervision.

Anatomical Shape

The vest is shaped to fit around the dog’s torso without extending unnecessarily over the tail.

A dog uses its tail to help control direction while swimming. The back of the vest should therefore end before the base of the tail and should not interfere with natural tail movement.

The neck, chest and abdominal areas should fit securely without restricting breathing or normal movement.

Adjustable Fastening System

The Ortocanis vest combines hook-and-loop sections with nylon straps and secure snap buckles.

The hook-and-loop fasteners help position the vest, while the adjustable nylon straps allow the circumference to be adapted to the dog’s body.

Before entering the water, confirm that:

  • Every buckle is completely closed
  • The straps are adjusted evenly
  • The vest cannot slide over the dog’s head
  • The neck area does not restrict breathing
  • No strap is twisted
  • The vest ends before the tail
  • The dog can move all four legs freely

Recheck the adjustment after the vest becomes wet.

Dorsal Rescue Handle

A strong handle is positioned on the back of the vest. It allows the handler to assist the dog when entering or leaving the water and may help during an urgent retrieval.

The handle is intended for controlled assistance. Do not suspend the dog unnecessarily or carry it for prolonged periods using only the handle.

Support the animal’s body whenever possible, particularly when lifting a heavy dog or an animal with a known orthopedic condition.

Reflective Details

Reflective strips improve visibility in certain low-light conditions and can make the dog easier to locate around the water.

Reflective material requires an external light source to function. It does not replace adequate lighting, close supervision or other water-safety measures.

The vest’s bright colour also helps improve daytime visibility.

Five Available Sizes

The appropriate size depends primarily on the dog’s weight and the vest’s load capacity. Back length provides an additional reference.

Available sizes:

  • XS: approximately 26 cm back length — for dogs weighing up to 12 kg
  • Small: approximately 36 cm back length — for dogs weighing up to 20 kg
  • Medium: approximately 44 cm back length — for dogs weighing up to 30 kg
  • Large: approximately 54 cm back length — for dogs weighing up to 36 kg
  • Extra Large: approximately 65 cm back length — for dogs weighing up to 45 kg

A Large may fit a Golden Retriever, but breed examples are approximate and should not replace measuring or checking the dog’s weight.

Do not select a size based only on back length. The selected vest must also provide sufficient flotation capacity for the dog’s weight.

Fitting the Vest

Introduce the vest on dry land before using it in water.

Allow the dog to smell the product, then place it gently over the back. Secure the hook-and-loop sections and adjust the nylon straps gradually.

The fit should be snug enough to prevent rotation but not so tight that it restricts breathing or movement.

You should be able to inspect the areas underneath the straps. Watch for pinched skin, trapped fur or contact near the armpits.

Let the dog walk briefly while wearing the vest and verify the fit again before approaching the water.

Gradual Introduction to Water

Begin in calm, shallow water where the dog can stand. Keep the animal close and provide reassurance.

Do not place the dog immediately in deep water or assume that it will understand how to swim while wearing the vest.

Increase exposure gradually according to the dog’s confidence, health and physical abilities. Hydrotherapy should be supervised by a qualified professional when it forms part of a rehabilitation program.

Important Water-Safety Precautions

The Life Vest for Dogs does not prevent drowning and does not replace direct supervision.

Never leave a dog unattended:

  • In or near a pool
  • On a dock
  • On a boat
  • Near open water
  • During hydrotherapy
  • While wearing the vest

Use only floating toys for retrieval games in the water. Non-floating objects may encourage the dog to dive or become disoriented.

Water temperature, currents, waves and fatigue must also be considered.

Cleaning and Inspection

Rinse the vest with clean water after use, especially following exposure to salt water, pool chemicals, mud or sand.

Allow it to air dry completely before storage. Inspect the buckles, straps, reflective strips, seams and rescue handle regularly.

Discontinue use if any fastening component, flotation panel or structural seam becomes damaged.

Veterinary Guidance

Consult a veterinarian before beginning hydrotherapy or water exercise with a dog that has reduced mobility, a recent injury, breathing difficulties or a medical condition.

The Life Vest for Dogs is a flotation and assistance product. It does not replace veterinary diagnosis, professional rehabilitation or water-safety supervision.

ConceptASR Vet offers assistance in English and French to help customers review the dog’s weight, back length and appropriate size before ordering.
